One of the best songs of Rabbit Hill's 1st cd, "Carrots & Sticks" as many fans and reviewers say."Mr. Roper" is a rock song which let us remember the brilliant sound of the great band "Whitesnake" (without copying them!).Sorry - but the lyrics don't tell a very happy story, cause...It was a hag ridden night, when Mr. Roper came for me. And the worst of it: in the end I woke up and - this lousy evil "dream" came true... ;-) |

Story Behind the Song
Motivation for the song?
It's very personal but finally I can assure you that it's true: sometimes you get the best ideas for songs or lyrics in your worst personal situations!! ;-(
And then you write it down without any hesitation - cause it's kinda flowing out of you.
What a surprise (or should I really say: "Bad luck..."?) for you and the band, if you notice in the studio (later), that recording it is not so easy as composing it!! ;-)
But in the end - you should at least give it a try, cause people (fans, friends & reviewers) could say afterwards: "Man, that's really one of the best songs of your cd!"
:-)
Lyrics
Mr. Roper
music & lyrics by P. Woratz
I opened my eyes, when he was standing by the door
in the middle of a hag-ridden night
He gave me a sign with his cruel blue eyes
a crafty little smile on his face
I said: Hey, whats up, man? Get out off my dream!
But then I began to understand.
I knew who he was - my dark pale friend -
just when I saw the noose in his hand.
The night when Mr. Roper came for me
it wasnt a dream, it was reality
but no one would ever hear me cry.
I followed him downstairs aimless thoughts in my brain
I hadnt a choice to play this hell of a game.
I tried to remember how this nightmare begun
looking for a way out, somewhere to run.
Couldnt find any answers, couldnt see any sense
but finally it made no difference.
He opened a door at the end of the stairs
I saw inside and I was filled with despair.
The night when Mr. Roper came for me
it wasnt a dream, it was reality
but no one would ever hear me cry.
The room was full of people -
I knew them all
I felt their evil eyes from everywhere - when I entered the hall
none of them said a word -
when the hangman took his rope
no one raised his voice -
when Mr. Roper did his job
I woke up in the dark. Someone was calling my name.
Couldnt believe, that I was back again.
I felt alleviation, saw a shimmering light.
I thought it was the end of this hag-ridden night.
But then the light went out. There was the noise of a spade.
I realized my situation a little bit too late.
Last thing I heard was the voice of the priest
six feet above he said: Rest in peace!
The night when Mr. Roper came for me
it wasnt a dream, it was reality
but no one did ever hear me cry.
