Story Behind the Song
This is about the afternoon my brother and I tried to write this very song together, sung to all the people we wish had been there. If Paradise has a Lost and Found department, I'm sure it holds a collection of all our not-so-glamorous memories like these - life's happiest little moments, left behind in our sad search for the Hollywood version.
This song was recorded with my close friend Peter Wright in Boulder, CO, in '96. Is there anything more fun in the world than an afternoon blown in the studio? Speaking of a Paradise Lost and Found... May we all learn to find joy even in our ridiculousness.
Lyrics
Benji says the first line's
Got to be about the 'Cabana
Like we're sitting 'round
Sipping 'coladas by a deep ocean blue
But it's more like corned beef hash
and just a whole lot of laughing --
The Paradise Lost and Found
By the new swimming pool.
"So Benji," I said,
"Now joy don't have to wear no bikini.
You know, it's all of these memories
Made on the slow afternoons."
And he said, "OH MY GOD, IT'S TRUE.
Just keep your hands off my breakfast."
Paradise Lost and Found,
Sitting 'round missing you...
CHORUS:
Feeling safe as a babe
and free as a bee,
I'm thinkin' God's smokin' something,
He's been easy one me
Oh just a day with my brother,
now I can't say
what that means to me...
This world keeps me humble,
But today I'm glad to be me.
So we're sitting 'round soaking up sun,
And he gives you the mention
And I'm overcome for just that moment
If only you could be here...
But you're not far
And the thought lingers gently
As Benji of the Lost and Found
Gets thrown in the pool
Feeling safe as a babe,
Free as a bee,
I'm thinkin' God's smokin' something
He's been easy on me
Oh just a day with my brother
I can't say what that means to me
Yeah, this world makes me crazy
But today I'm glad to be me
Benji of the Lost and Found
Oh, God, I miss you
