Story Behind the Song
The motivation for this song comes from my response to the Soul Music classic recorded by Aretha Franklin,"You make me feel like a Natural Woman". My thoughts on this are, "Why do we need a man to feel like Natural Woman?" If we want to find solutions to our problems and bring about change in this world, we must live like Natural Woman. So this song discusses some of the roles of women in tradtional society. I have included Nyabinghi because I have read that Nyabinghi was the name of a female African warrior that lead her people to victory against slave traders & the like for over 100 years. Even after her passing, the people were empowered simply by chanting her name and playing her rhythm. Each small step that each woman takes closer to the Mother Earth has a positive effect on us all. The song was written in my heart, which in our Native tradition is the mind. It does not take long for me to write songs, because they usually come completed in my mind before I even vocalize them or play them on an instrument. The chanting came to mafter the rest of the song was already "done". Since I already know how the songs sounded originally, in their purest form, in my mind, it does not take long for me to duplicate that sound.
