Story Behind the Song
I had this idea floating around in my head for several years before I actually wrote the song. I composed the music on the computer the day I first bought my Cubase MIDI software. Thus, the synthy feel of the music, which I think matches the mood of the lyric.
Lyrics
After The Beep
(Seth Jackson)
Trapped inside my condo, walls are closing in
CD player, VCR, TV is wearing thin
Boot up my computer, staring at the screen
Quickly running out of things to say to a machine
My auto-dial cordless phone brings reason to rejoice
All I want is just to hear a warm and friendly voice
I try to call my best friend, the answer makes me weep:
Leave your name and number after the beep
Stranded in a traffic jam, no place I can go
Getting sick of beer commercials on the radio
Empty faces passing by all seem so unreal
Separated from them by these mighty walls of steel
My high-tech mobile phone is what I need to make my day
Entire modern world is just a touch-tone call away
But time and time again now, there's one reward I reap:
Leave your name and number after the beep
Oh, does anybody hear me?
Oh, is anybody there?
Everyone has things to do and places to go
Does anybody care?
I stop in at the corner bar, I need some company
But they're all watching football on the 40-inch TV
Perhaps I'll ask my neighbor to lend a friendly ear
He's busy with his Walkman and he doesn't seem to hear
I'm going home, I've had enough, fatigue fills up my head
My search for warmth will end beneath the covers of my bed
And if you try to call me, you'll find me sound asleep.
Leave your name and number after the beep
