Story Behind the Song
once upon a time in r&b music we actually had to master our instruments. this is a tribute to some of those who continue to help me learn mine.
Lyrics
FLOW
shh-if you listen closely,
you just might be able to hear this song...
and the thrill will never be gone,
'coz BB and lucille can make you move at will
and deep down in your soul you will feel
this can't be fake...there's no choice but to keep it real
and as i slowly scan the sky,
the color of the dusk has me in a wonderful daze...
and i can still hear the sound of jimi hendrix wailing away
and singing purple haze
uh oh..waitaminnit...
now it sounds like george benson scatting masquerade
and as the sun rises in the east,
it's also bumpin' on sunset in the west
montgomery, that is, you know...
man, that brother sure had a flow
and i definitely can't forget my man,
who ruled the bass guitar with an iron hand
he said his lady was one in a million,
and he always had a master plan
i haven't heard another brother who could smother a bass line
like larry graham
man, that brother sure had a Flow
man, that brother sure had a Flow...
the longer we listen, the longer it will last
it's all about history, glory days past
there was magic in the music,
and everybody knows they had the Flow
and the next thing i know, emotion washes over me
like a summer breeze in 1974
the brother with the flow at that point in memory was ernie,
and the first time i heard him, i knew i wanted the Flow, too
mad skills on a fender stratocaster....
taught me to reach higher and play faster than i ever had
and with passion
therefore, me and my boys played as hard for five as for fifty,
'coz it wasn't about getting paid or getting laid...
we just wanted to play...
my nights were spent with stacks of 45s
playing duets with ernie, BB, carlos, albert,...
george, johnny and ray
all patient, all brilliant
they're with me still today....
teaching me scales,
showing me how to place my fingers
showing me how i can get the Flow
so bow down, so bow down
to the grandfather of that smooth guitar sound
man those brothers sure had a Flow
like robert johnson standing at the crossroads
keep on listening,
and a new appreciation you will have found
