Story Behind the Song
When the Gulf War started, I'd only been out of OCS a year and had a lot of friends over there. I was worried sick about them, and frustrated about not being there myself. I had mixed emotions about the war, and the lives that would be lost to save our main Oil supplier. So it was kind of born out of protest.
Lyrics
OLD SOLDIERS Words and music by Elliott C. Pacetti
Ive never been a fighting man
I volunteered and did my time
Never saw the fire of battle
Or the fire that burns in mens eyes
I think thats something only old soldiers know
The ones who were lucky and survived
Its gotta be something only old soldiers know
Its always the young ones that die
My grandfather fought in World War II
Said he saw things that could make you cry
My uncle fought in Viet Nam
What he saw back home made him lose his pride
Dad was drafted back in fifty-one
He saw his buddies pay the price
Now the fight they foughts forgotten
Like the headstones left behind
A friend of mine was down in Panama
Where men and women fought side by side
Then she was sent to Arabia
Said she saw hell with her own eyes
