Story Behind the Song
Written for Head Ed's retirement in 1989 and subsequently adopted as unofficial DV Staff theme song. (My apologies to those of you unfamiliar with Deer Valley YMCA Camp in southwestern Pennsylvania. I'm sure this makes very little sense, but thanks for giving it a listen, anyway.)
Lyrics
Take me back in time and make me over
To the man I'd like to be, in the place I'd like to see
When I had the time to stop and smell the clover
And the fragrance seemed to last, like an echo from the past
If you close your eyes you'll find, you can go there any time
Where the days are long and the nights as sweet as wine
Chorus: Though many years and miles may come between us
There's a memory of a time that never ends,
And as the days drift slowly by 'neath the Pennsylvania sky
I'm singin' at Deer Valley with my friends
Close your eyes and find that wide-eyed wonder
Did you think the child had died? Maybe you just never tried
Smell the woodsmoke, hear the sound of rolling thunder
And if you hear the music start, I'll bet you know the tune by heart
There are voices on the wind, open up and let 'em in
Can't you feel them drifting over you again?
(Chorus)
There's an innocence we've lost, we can only guess the cost
Times are hard and we grow harder every day
But with friends here by our side, we can find the hope that died
Let the spirit lift and carry you away
Take me back in time and let me feel it
There's a spirit hanging there, in the chill of morning air
If there's sorrow let the joy and laughter heal it
This is how the journey ends, in a circle of our friends
With a tender warm embrace, and a smile upon your face
Come and share with me the magic in this place
(Chorus)
Though many tears and smiles may come between us
There's a memory of a time that never ends,
And as the days drift slowly by 'neath the Pennsylvania sky
I'm singin' at Deer Valley with my friends
