Story Behind the Song
Across the Balkans, Rom (Gypsy) families face pressure to adopt the ways of the cultural majorities around them. In some places, Rom children have been taken away from their families and sent to schools where they're forbidden to speak their mother tongue. Not surprisingly, most drop out. This song, sung in Romany and first heard in Macedonia in the 1970s, could be the story of one of these children.
