They did things different in our parents' age: you tried your best to make a marriage work. These days, 'if it's broken, you simply trade it in'. Is this right?
CD: A place where no one sails to
Credits: Written by Craig Gittins, arranged by Craig Gittins and Gary Parkinson

    Story Behind the Song
Craig is lucky in that his parents are still happily married. Not everyone is like that and there's no need to stay in a dmaging relationship, but the gist of the song is that maybe we just don't try hard or long enough to make things work anymore.
The song originally included references to Craig's beloved football team Mansfield Town FC and then-Lottery hostess Anthea Turner ("Pick my balls Anthea"), but these were shed after Gary ordered an extensive restructuring. The backing track was recorded in a day, vocals in an hour or so. Plans to include a 'Hill Street Blues' type piano on the chrous had to be put on hold due to lack of time in the studio (Touch Wood Studios, Leeds, Yorkshire).

    Lyrics
    We, we planned our divorce
    Before wed done the time
    And we planned our indiscretions
    Before committing any crime

And we all want to love like our fathers and mothers
With the option of trying out a couple of others
In a land where if its broken you simply trade it in
Weve sacrificed our dreams for convenience, it seems.

You, you fought for your space
    I fought for mine
    And we fought for independence
But were dependent all the time

And we all want to love like our fathers and mothers
With the option of trying out a couple of others
In a land where if its broken you simply trade it in
Weve sacrificed our dreams for convenience, it seems.

I wanna backtrack, I wanna get my dreams back
Im more confused now than the days when I was young
I wanna backtrack, I wanna rewind the track
I wanna listen to the words of those I thought were dumb

And we all want to love like our fathers and mothers
With the option of trying out a couple of others
In a land where if its broken you simply trade it in
Weve sacrificed our dreams for convenience, it seems.

We, we want all the world
    But works an ugly word
And we, we want all weve seen,
    Felt and touched and heard

And we all want to love like our fathers and mothers
With the option of trying out a couple of others
In a land where if its broken you simply trade it in
Weve sacrificed our dreams for convenience, it seems.
