A quiet yet voluptuous setting of Martin Luther's Advent Chorale, "Saviour of the Gentiles, Come." This version expresses a palpable yearning for a long awaited redemption. | MP3.com CD: ĪBach Leipzig Chorales, Vol. 1 - buy it!

Story Behind the Song
One of three totally different settings for this tune in the Leipzig Chorales. For many years I made it a practice of playing this piece on the First Sunday in Advent. The latest version, approved December 19, 2000, features MIDI pipe organ with a lush registration by Jonathan Orwig. The transcription took about two hours, phrasing, ornamentation and nuancing took another three hours. Perhaps yet another hour or two was consumed in the creating of the pipe organ version.
Lyrics
German
Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland,
Der Jungfrauen Kind erkannt,
Dess sich wundert alle Welt,
Gott solch Geburt ihm Bestellt.
--by Martin Luther, 1524
English
Savior of the [Gentiles], come,
Virgin's Son, here make Thy throne,
Wonder at it, heaven and earth,
That the Lord chose such a birth.
--Richard Massie
