|
During rehearsals for the performance and recording of Sofonda, Roy L. did some experimenting (not the first time), made some impromptu recordings. This is the only surviving alternate version that features a rhythm section and a sax player along with the boy's choir who struggle to keep up with the peppy tempo. |
CD: Not available on CD. Very rare.

Story Behind the Song
Roy L. is quite bold. While rehearsing the boy's choir for thier debut of this gem, he tried several different arrangements including a marching band version, some sort of Tejano Polka with a breakdown section that paid homage to Salina, a version that featured a dancing Poodle, a hip-hop style RAP that feature Roy L. himself (this one was banned), and the only surviving recording of an alternate version that is offered here. It's an uptempo jazz version that features a rhythm section and a sax player named Pepe "Peppy" Hernandez. This piece was only performed once during rehearsal. The tempo was much too fast for the boys, and Pepe (Peppy) has such a quick metabolism that he specializes in very fast solos. (Thus his nickname.) They could never agree on a tempo so the rehearsal ended with several of the boys in tears, and Pepe (Peppy) storming out cursing in Spanish, and summoning the wrath of El Diablo on Roy L.
