    Story Behind the Song
Jason and I grew up in Seattle. One afternoon we wanted to write a song. We immediately thought of one of the greatest loves of our life, the Cascade mountains. We decided to write a bit of a love song to a mountain we had climbed several times Mt. St. Helens. The sad thing is, we were only about 5 or 6 years old when she blew, so we hadnt known her very well before that. But we had seen pictures. She was arguably the most beautiful peak in the range. It was like falling in love with Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys, and then realizing that you could never know her that way again. Its a little tough to realize that we all play our part on this stage of life at different times. Theres a lot of things in history that I would have liked to have witnessed, and great-great grandparents I would have liked to have known, but they were on the stage at a different time than me. I guess well all get to see each other backstage someday, right?

    There she stands.
So calm and peaceful in tranquility.
With the summer energy of a honey bee.
Encircled by the ties of her family.
Observed and adored by lovers like me.

For lack of chance I never spoke to her up close.
Heaven only knows what I love the most.
On the surface just a playful towhead child.
But something inside of here was driving that girl wild.

I was watching heavy clouds roll in on Redondo Beachs bay
Where the waters not a turquoise, just a melancholy gray.
And old-growth trees that have lived with ease
For a thousand years and five
The rumble left the tumbled lumber with not one branch alive.

Bainbridge from a ferry in the Northwests murky brine
The misty halls of Snoqualmie Falls leave me smiling, feeling fine.

Helen was a saint until that fateful day in May
When Spirit Lake blew a parting kiss,
She wished that she could stay.
She was waiting all this time for her farewell to arrive.
The super stained-glass sunrise made her stretch, she came alive.
And at the port were her dearest friends to wave to her good-bye.
And then they watched her soar into the sky.
