Story Behind the Song
In the Sixties it was Black rights; in the
Seventies, it was women's rights. Each time
you marched, you thought you were securing
everyone's rights. That is until the groups
you fought for decided that your rights
weren't worth fighting for, and the hate
against you was qualitatively different
than the hate that had been leveled against
them.
Lyrics
And when the time was right, I stood my ground for you
and I prayed that when the time was right
you'd stand up for me too.
But when the moment came, my heart it turned
to stone
When I realized when I looked 'round
That I stand here alone
Is it just the young who sing the songs
that we have sung?
Do melodies all die off as we grow?
And promises unkept, forget the tears we wept
Guess I'm thinking of a time
I'm thinking of a time
I'm thinking of a long time ago.
