Story Behind the Song
Eclipsing is the fourth song on Balladesque, which was was recorded over the course of a year, from September 98 to September 99. It's Alun's first solo CD. (A solo cassette, Rubber Sole, was released in 96.) As with every indie artist, the budget was almost non-existent, so most of it was recorded at home. At the time, Alun was working as an in-house engineer at Chemical Sound in Toronto, so he was able to do the drums and keyboards on down-time there.
The rest, however, was recorded at his own Moldy Floor Studios. Alun played or faked his way through most of the instruments, but since he can't drum or play keyboards very well, he called in some friends who could.
Very special thanks to Justin Peroff, Michelle Josef, Mike Munro, James Gray, John Francom, Don Kerr, Mark Kesper and lastly, Oh Susanna, who all performed the parts Alun couldn't play.
By the way, the CD cover is a blatant rip-off of The Replacements1984 album Let it Be.
Lyrics
I follow behind you
up to your room again
never really sure if Ive ever wanted this
tell me to enjoy myself
finding pleasure with you
the light stays on
then you change your mind
eclipsing a candle in the sunlight
it would never be as bright
reflected in your moonlight eyes
eclipsing
peaks and valleys
flattened by the numbness
my heart feels so strung out
were always returning to
comfortless comfort
engulfed by you
open your eyes wide
Ill never know
how much you really meant
or you just said
because you couldnt bear
to be alone
summer is ending
creeping to a close
returning to the world
that we both know
