Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song for a very good friend. The story developed over about 8 months.
Lyrics
"We're just friends," she said as they wandered round 'till 4 AM.
Talking of life and fears and where they'd be in just five years.
"We're just friends," she said as they ate together every meal.
If we're just friends, he thought, why do I feel the way I feel?
"We're just friends," she said as he wished that he could fix her hair.
If they were friends he'd feel a whole lot safer going there.
"We're just friends," she said as he leaned against her window pane.
If we're just friends, he thought, why is she driving me insane?
(Chorus)
Who's to say where friendship stops and something more begins?
If love is there, who loses and who wins?
You say there's something more to life and love than we can see.
Instead of holding back... let it be.
(End Chorus)
Time passed. They saw each other less and less but dreamt of more.
He found he couldn't help but miss what they had had before.
As questions welled up in his mind about how she could feel
He realized that just as friends those feelings could be real.
She didn't think about him. At least, that's what she tried.
And there were times she wished she didn't feel she had to hide.
"We're just friends," she told herself and wondered if they were.
If they were friends why did he look the way he looked to her?
(Chorus)
Finally he made his mund up: he'd be what she said she'd want.
She made her mind up, too, and asked him out to take a jaunt.
What she told him was more than he'd hoped he'd ever hear.
"Let's spend our time together and be what you'd hoped all year."
"We're good friends," she pleaded, "and I hope you understand."
"Yeah, we're good friends," he said, and reached out to take her hand.
