Story Behind the Song
I started jamming with these guys the summer of "98". I had never played with a band before, yet had played percussions for 25 years. I write song lyrics also, so I wrote some words about how much I loved playing with this band.
Lyrics
As we play Copyright1999 Nov. 20, 1998.
Lyrics by Matthew Alsen.
Music by Don Henry.
Leave for work, it's dark outside.
To the street, to catch my ride.
Five days a week, but that's all I can stand.
Can't wait to play, can't wait to play with the band.
Don't have a house, and I drive an old car,
I don't have much, but I've got a guitar.
Life is to short, so I play when I can,
I got to play, got to play in the band.
Chorus
Im not a rich man but I have all I need.
You play the rhythm while I pick out a lead.
The drums are talking to the band as we play,
It's only music but it blows me away.
I don't need lovin, when Im up on the stage.
Im not Frank Zappa and Im not Jimmy Page.
Im just a guy playing songs that I know.
If you want lovin, see me after the show.
Might not get famous, we might not get rich.
We got no record, to the stores we can pitch.
We got no label, but we have lots of gear.
Were having fun and that's the reason were here.
Chorus
Im not a rich man but I have all I need.
You play the rhythm while I pick out a lead.
The drums are talking to the band as we play,
It's only music but it blows me away.
Adjust the volume, turn up the bass.
Lets rock the house, and get some life in this place.
To pay the bills we must work when we can.
Can't work at night, so we play in the band.
