Story Behind the Song
ANTONIO LUCIO VIVALDI was born in Venice in 1678. In 1704 he entered the priesthood and was appointed violin instructor the following year at the "ospedale della pietà," a girls' orphanage. For the next 35 years he composed pieces for the girls' instruction and for public concerts at the orphanage. In 1711 Vivaldi's works were first published abroad, securing for him wider fame. J.S. Bach, as a student, studied the popular Italian style by recopying Vivaldi's manuscripts. In 1738 Vivaldi was removed from his post at the ospedale. With few options at his advanced age, he accepted an invitation by his friend and admirer Emperor Charles to join him in Vienna. Charles soon died, however, and Vivaldi was not far behind, succumbing the following year to a gastric infection. Like Mozart fifty years after him, Vivaldi was afforded only the most modest burial, and his grave site was long ago lost under the expanding streets of Vienna.
The great bulk of Vivaldi's enormous output was never published during his lifetime, and many of his works were not discovered until the twentieth century. Nor were they sought: until the rediscovery of "The Four Seasons" in the 1950's ushered in the Vivaldi Renaissance, his work was widely dismissed. The concerti I perform here were among a wealth of manuscripts discovered by Alberto Gentili in 1926 in a convent in Alessandria. Legal battles over the rights to them prevented their publication or performance until after World War II. The dates of composition are not known. The works are written for the sopranino recorder, the ancestor of the modern piccolo.
