Story Behind the Song
In addition to showing off their drummer, "I Don't Know" was written to be a lot of fun to play live, and to break up the depressing slow numbers in the set. It's basically a fun song, in which one can't expect to find a huge depth of lyrical wealth or profound philosophy, but that's not the point. We're having fun on this one.
Lyrics
I'm a mess, you're a wreck / can I get a rain check / what's all this, I can't say / but it won't go away / and you're just sitting there / do you know, do you care / should I stay, should I go / I don't know / Questions asked, nothing gained / can't perceive, can't explain / nothing thought, nothing said / think I'll just go to bed / don't tell me what to do / 'cause I'm older than you / leave me be, let it go / I don't know / I don't know / I don't know / goes to show / no one knows / I don't know / I don't know / goes to show / I don't know / What's that smell, where am I / where'd you go, who's that guy / turn me up, is this on / where has everyone gone / stomach hurts, ouch my brain / don't tell me I'm insane / grandpa shrinks, does he grow / I don't know / How are you, I am fine / what comes next, what's my line / tell the truth, am I fat / I don't need to hear that / microwave, telephone / still won't leave me alone / I've gone mad, does it show / I don't know / I don't know / I don't know / goes to show / no one knows / I don't know / I don't know / goes to show / I don't know / I'm a mess, you're a wreck / can I get a rain check / what's all this, I can't say / but it won't go away / don't tell me what to do / 'cause I'm older than you / leave me be, let it go / I don't know.
