Story Behind the Song
This song was written as a bridge between the world of childhood security and the world of adult independence and uncertainty. The lyrics clearly reflect this transition. Also, the song satisfied the desire of the band to write a very honest, straight-ahead rock song. As with the other songs on Lifetime, this one was recorded at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley California with producer/engineer Steve Fontano. Drum track recorded in one take, all overdubs done after the fact.
An interesting side note is that this song (and the whole album for that matter) was recorded at Fantasy in concurrence with the recording of Santana's multi-platinum album Supernatural, for which Steve Fontano won a Grammy. The two bands alternated days at the studio and Steve worked tirelessly on both productions.
Lyrics
Daybreak on an empty seat
Where soon the light of day means
Youll come for me
What are the pieces that youll bring today
To puzzle out the shapes
In a different way?
Are they the same?
Are they all the same?
Down here near the apron strings
Clinging to the leg
And the love you bring
But when you throw me
To the wolves outside
Will the sun still be as warm
As the place I hide?
Rock-a-bye baby on the tree top
When the wind blows the cradle will rock
And down will come baby, cradle
And all
