    Story Behind the Song
I have recorded this piece twice in my life. The first recording took place in Germany and was cancelled due to technical problems. Everyone was sent home. Later I went to Krakow in Poland and made this recording again. During this stay I visited the "Auschwitz Concentration Camp" were many Jewish people were killed by the Nazis. What a terrible feeling to walk over this blood sucked ground. It's worth a visit once you come to Poland. May be we understand nothing from watching this "tidy" place. But we carry a horrible feeling home we can never forget. I don't remember much from the recording work but when I went home by train I had a funny meeting with a Polish cellist - I lost his name - who was going to Germany to play for a job in any orchestra. We had a nice talk and after short time he suggested to play some duos. So we played duos in the train!

    Lyrics
Tchaikovsky dedicated his "Rococo Variations" opus 33 to the German cellist Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, who at the time had a professorship for violoncello at the Moscow Conservatory, and who also played the world premiere on November 18, 1877 in Moskoow. The work displays hardly any references to Russian music, rather moving along the lines of Classical style with its balance and cheerfulness. The composer obviously approached the music with an eye to Central Europe: he wrote the Variations out of his ardent admiration for Mozart. The scoring for the orchestra is quite economical, adding only a few woodwinds to the four string groups. On the other hand the solo part is demanding, being almost wholly written in the high register that sound particulary good. Still, the solo instrument is at no time taxed more than it can deliver, so that these Variations are almost more gratifying than some solo concerti.
