Story Behind the Song
This song was created musically by Martin, and other members of the band. Michael created the lyrics blending his strong patriotism with his dislike for people who sit around and whine about the status quo without making an effort to change anything. Hey, if you dont like it here, you are free to leave...aint it great?!
This song was recorded live in June 1998 by Pat Mcgee of Nine Finger Recording. Skip Chisum of the "Blue Johnnies" and Josh Oberbrockling also performed on this song.
Lyrics
I felt the sun for the first time yesterday.
It felt good, Oh Lord dont you know it felt good, yea.
I woke up and saw America for the first time yesterday.
It felt good...proud to be American, it felt good oh yea.
We got Children on the street, killing everybody that they meet.
They are bad ass, at least they think so.
We the government taking our money, they kick back and think it's funny, where the hell does it go?
We got those cosmos, used to be Russians,
Now those cats are free.
They look to the east, they look to the west They wanna be just like you and me.
It's a great big world,
It's a great big world,
It's a great big mean ole world.
It's a great big world,
It's a great big world,
It's a great big mean, mean bad ass world!
It's a great big world,
It's a great big world,
It's a great big mean ole world.
It's a great big world,
It's a great big world,
It's a great big mean, mean bad ass world!
This is America! This is America, home of the free.
If you don't wanna fight for the country, boy well you know you dont stand by me!
