Story Behind the Song
These short piano pieces are obviously inspired and influenced by Mendelssohns Lieder Ohne Worte, which were published in groups of six, but are not closely modeled on his practice. They exploit similar pianistic techniques of cantabile, but some of them differ structurally from the classical practice by being multi-sectional, with more than one tempo in a piece. They are also intended to be performed as a sequence, which is questionable in the case of the Mendelssohn sets.
They were first performed complete, by the composer, in London on 2 May 1998. The first US performance took place in Lincoln, Nebraska on 7 May 2000.
