    Story Behind the Song
The My Lai Massacre is perhaps the saddest footnote in 20th century U.S. Military History. It was at My Lai in March of 1968 that Lt. William Calley and the men under him slaughtered scores of unarmed Vietnamese civilians, lining old men and children before a ditch and machine-gunning them down.
From the smoke of this horrifically shameful event rose at least one point of remarkable courage. Hugh Thompson, a U.S. Army helicopter pilot, witnessed the atrocities from the air and landed his craft amidst his countrymen in an effort to halt the massacre. (Nearly 30 years later, after an extensive U.S. Military cover-up, Mr. Thompson was awarded the Soldier's Medal for his efforts).
Lt. Calley has never been reprimanded by the U.S. Military; in fact, a country & western song written in his honor (for his role at My Lai) was a small hit in 1968.
The track, Lt. Calley is a small attempt to recognize Mr. Thomson's bravery and his anguish.

    Lyrics
Lt. Callie works as a jeweler
Sells digital watches and pearls from Japan
While each night I'm wakened by screams from the jungle
The screams of young children and the M-16s roar

They said it couldn't happen out there in the jungle
We were the good guys we fought for the right
Lined up 'gainst the trenches he said they weren't human
I landed between them sensing something was wrong

    Lt. Callie killed 45 people
Killed women and babies and elderly men
I landed between them my craft was a buffer
Some lives there were rescued but God at what cost

Lt. Callie works as a jeweler
Sells digital watches and pearls from Japan
While each night I'm wakened by screams from the jungle
I wish I'd just flown off and never come down.
