Story Behind the Song
The three verses are about my wife as a young woman, my best friend, and my daughter. They and I have all had our hearts broken before. Yet, amazingly, we're all on a good track now. This is the story of how we found our way.
Lyrics
A girl stands alone
In drifts of snow
Head bowed,
Counting
Coins in her pocket
Her dark tendrils flow
In a field of white.
So far from home here,
She's followed her love
She fears all love has left her.
She fears love has forsaken her here.
The heart comes in pieces;
It breaks all the time.
But the heart is a puzzle,
It breaks by design.
I wish I could give you
What your heart's dreaming of,
But the heart finds its way
By falling in love.
He stands in the doorway
A strong young man
Drill in his hand
Earnest and tall
He looks into my eyes
Then turns away
To fix the door, for
The door is broken.
He fears his wife has left him
He fears she has forsaken him here.
Love comes when it wants to
And goes where it will
It may come to you
If you stay very still
I wish I could give you
What your heart's dreaming of
But the heart finds its way
By falling in love.
A tiny baby girl
Holds out her hands
On a changing table
A world away
Her mother left her here
To these walls of white
Now she's alone
With no-one to love her.
This is where fate has left her
How long must she be forsaken here?
The heart comes in pieces;
It breaks all the time.
But the heart is a puzzle,
It breaks by design.
I wish I could give you
What your heart's dreaming of,
But the heart finds its way
By falling in love.
You'll find your way
By falling in love
Don't be afraid
To fall in love.
