Story Behind the Song
Charlie wrote this for our last EP. A biting paean to the enticing nature of violence and war in society, and how it sucks up young men only to chew them up and spit them out. The lyrics are killer, and Bill Gerstel plays a great vacuum hose at the beginning and end that just makes the song.
music, words: Charlie
Charlie: guitars, lead vocals
Scott: bass, background vocals
Bill: drums and hose
Lyrics
young and old they come
tell the fields and the arms that lost them
theyre with the drum
my muscles jumped and my blood hummed
my bones danced and my feet would run
my heart was a bird inside
the skin on me was glad to be alive
when I heard the drum
when I heard the drum
when I heard the drum
when I heard the drum
once I was proud to march in line
I found the fire pure enough to blind
I was a bullet in the brotherhood of the gun
where pain is sweet, its price forgotten
tomorrow never comes
when your head is filled
with the echo of the drum
with the echo of the drum
with the echo of the drum
with the echo of the drum
with the echo of the drum
give a man an order and hes happy to obey
give him a shovel and he digs a grave
in the land Im calling from
no voice speaks louder than the drum
I was of the net as the fish is of the sea
I was a free man but I loved the chains in me
self-sacrifice became my life
sharp and sweet but it cuts like a knife
hard and gray as the blade youve become
dead as steel but
your heart beats like a drum
your heart beats like a drum
your heart beats like a drum
your heart beats like a drum
