Story Behind the Song
A campfire song about death and afterlife. The idea just came to me, I scribbled down some lyrics, and a long time later found a guitar riff to put it all together. Kind of sums up my feeling about the seemingly random nature of life, and how little we can really control it. it's not meant to be religious, but it sounds like it.
music, lyrics: Scott
Scott: acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drum program, lead vocals
Charlie: electric guitar, bass, background vocals
Bill: tambourine, background vocals
Janet Flynn: background vocals
Lyrics
its a silent river
and we are all canoes
heading for the waterfall in
death-defying lunges
averting sudden plunges
beneath the mirrored surface
that we glide upon
like animated sponges
and the cleverest of phrases
are only toothpick paddles
against the timeless current
of the downstream flow
and as hard as we might row
we can barely make a ripple
in our final course
to the undertow
but we can watch the scenery
as we skim the shore
and we can loll in tidepools
for days or more
and we can breathe the breeze
that urges us on
and we can have a good laugh
at who the joke is on
(cuz thats us all)
oh we look for logic
and we scent for sense
we read for reason
and we argue the difference
we miss the meanings
as we clutch at clues
but when we finally face the fatal
were going to get the good news
