 | | Story Behind the Song
I wrote this one on some kind of fever. Maybe I had been up to some adventures and was returning home, I cant clearly remember. The metaphor is fairly obvious - we can get trapped in a waking nightmare and, for unfortunate insomniacs, sleep is the only balm. Like being stuck on the wrong side of a river in a time of war. I characterised this as female because sleep for me is associated with woman. People say they sleep with each other as an euphemism for having sex, but actually the sleep itself can be more intimate than the act of love. How does it feel to wake up next to a prostitute?
LyricsOh Mrs Sleep won't you ferry me across the Dream River
My head's full of nothing, my stomach's on fire
I've been running through lands that would make your heart shiver
Through deserts and jungles and sticky quagmire

Well I don't know what happened, my mind seemed to falter
I swore at my lover and I cursed at my friends
There's some evil on these shores, lead my down by the halter
To the banks lined with blossom where my journey ends

I've been running from demons that sprang from the desert
There've been shapes in the darkness too wierd to describe
Oh won't you have pity, I'm close to destruction
Take me 'cross the Dream River to the rest of my tribe

When I came to these shores I saw instant salvation
I'd swim but I'm spent and I'd surely expire
Take your raft made of willow from the old landing station
And we'll drift through the night to the songs of the choir

Oh Mrs Sleep won't you take me and be my dream giver
I've been standing on my own feet for weary hours long
Let me forget who I am while we cross the Dream River
Take my head in your lap, let me feel I belong
