    Story Behind the Song
late night radio dj with delusional tendancies
laments the loss of college sweetie to the greener
pastures and purple mountains of the benign
yet omnipresent US Forrestry Service. a savvy
career move proves no less painful as the "sweet
sorrow" of parting turns to full blown paranoia
amid revelations of betrayal and deception.
the bridge alone was rewritten 47 different times
within a six-month period. the third verse was
omitted altogether as the vengeful howls could
not be conformed to the melody.

    Lyrics
    late night the city sleeps
i'm still out here on the streets
steppin' to the neon where the nighthawks go
    traffic lights flashin' red
    and i can't change a thing i said
and i'd be dead a thousand times if wishin' made it so
    and she says:
you could disappear at any moment
i could turn around and you'ld be gone
you can't hold on...to one perfect moment
    sidewalks won't talk to me
they don't hear my vain apologies
the empty faces in the shadows taunting me
what if... why not...all the times i forgot
i should be gone by now but any fool can see
    what she said
you could disappear at any moment
i could turn around and you'ld be gone
    you can't hold on
    and I remember
    we said forever
    we raised our glasses
    knowing all along
    you wait too long
    and the perfect moment passes
i can't go back the way i came
    i've gotten turned around again
