Story Behind the Song
I wrote the song after reading an article about Van Gogh. I imagined a man falling in love with one of his paintings or photos, and going mad.
I wrote the song one night in 1992, on a four-track, in two takes. The drums were a real-time recording from an Ensoniq EPS.
Lyrics
A little after midnight, along the water's edge
I thought I saw you standing there, but it must have been my head
In a lonely picture room, the glossy and the matte
A figure reaches out, reaches for my hand
Hand...
Umbrellas in the sun, shelter milky white
A waterfall beneath your halo, like a diamond in the night
I'll find the man and the soul machine, that steals your saddened smile
I'll hold the secret still, and hide you in the night
Night...
A little after midnight, along the water's edge
I thought I saw you standing there, but it must have been my head
You say to me with unmoving lips, "It's all in my mind."
If I tear the canvas done, you'd say I was unkind
Unkind... The Night...
