A song about a penis. He seems to get you into nothing but trouble. Especially when he's been drinking. | MP3.com CD: The Best Of Badwolf - buy it! MP3.com CD: Sleeping Dogs Lie - buy it!

Story Behind the Song
I'm sure I don't need to point this out, but a penis is sometimes called a "dick", which also happens to be short for "Richard". Just a tongue-in-cheek reference to the subject of the song, penises.
On my way over to the studio one day I had a really humorous thought (I do some of my best songwriting in my car). What if your penis was actually a separate entity with a mind of its own? It certainly seems that way sometimes. He would get drunk and try to talk you into doing things that you NEVER would do on your own. He would rationalize and coax you until you found yourself in bed with someone, then when you woke up the next day, he wouldn't have any helpful advice to get you out of the awful mess he had gotten you into. The song's about that, plain and simple. I was and remain really proud of these lyrics as well as the music of this song. I think the lyrics are clever, but perhaps that only points out how juvenile I really am.
I wrote the song on bass, which I find to be a wonderful mechanism for "thinking outside the box". When one picks up a guitar, there is frequently the tendency to fall into certain "ruts" that your hands have played a million times. When one picks up an instrument with which one is not as familiar, that tendency is circumvented for the most part, and you are better able to write from a purely creative space. It's even better to write songs completely in your head without using an instrument at all until you're ready to bring it from your brain into the material world, but it takes a tremendous amount of either concentration or inspiration to write that way... at least it does for me.
The boy saying "Good luck, man" at the end of the song is Adam Krause, the same boy from the intro of "Smooth Elevator". On the original demo for this song, I just added the line as an after-thought meaning "good luck controlling your penis" in response to the last line of the song "haven't found a way to stop him yet". When the CD was being finished up, we decided to let Adam say the line. I like the idea of a kid saying it because it could potentially be the voice of the penis responding.
Lyrics
Got a friend named "Richard"
He's got one thing on his mind
I try so hard to hold him back
From what he seems to find
It seems when he starts drinking
He loses all control, he says
"A little beer, a little sex
a little rock-and-roll"
"What are you trying to do?"
I try to find a way to make him see
"Why can't you try something new?"
I try to discuss things rationally
He says "Hey! I'm just being me."
Little head, little brain
Mind in the gutter, down the drain
One track mind and his mind is set
Ain't found a way to stop him yet
Yeah. You know Richard,
he's got all the lines
Starts talking sweet and
they fall for him every time
He'll take the time to touch them
in just the right way
But in the morning,
He doesn't have a thing to say
