..."If You Could Only Remember What I Try to Forget," is a very melodic and soulful country ballad which suggests that, if only these two could meet somewhere in the middle, things might be resolved....Written and arranged by Esther Valentine Photo Graphic by Bobby Blaire
Credits: Esther Valentine, vocals and composition, piano/keyboard, producer; Vern Monet, acoustic & steel guitar (he's fabulous!)

    Story Behind the Song
Oh, okay, so I was pawin' the dust over some spineless gentleman, I admit it. But, writing a song about the anguish, pouring it out into a song is such alchemy - it really has healed me! It's amazing, how tears can be transformed....

Really, the song is about how that phantom memory replays itself, almost to the point of seeing that person, feeling them there, that you could swear they're still with you. And sometimes, I think, that's true, that the other person may be thinking of you, but doesn't want to admit their true feelings. But, shoulda, couldna, woulda isn't going to get us very far....move on, and take the advice of Song Number One! (If It Don't Work, Don't Fix It)

    Lyrics
'Thought I saw you standing in the hallway
    Looking the way you did,
When I turned around, the only sound
    Was a heartbreak from within.

'Thought I saw you walkin' down the hallway
Comin' to take me in your arms,
But that tender touch I've missed so much
Was as distant as the stars.

I know you're thinkin' of me
You know, I haven't been wrong yet,
    If you could only remember
    What I try to forget.

'Thought I heard you call my name so softly
    Sayin' you need my love,
Then I closed my eyes to realize
That these dreams are not enough.

What will it take to bring you to me closer
Is there something that I forgot to do,
Oh, I've tried and tried to say goodbye
But, I can't help feelin' blue.

I know you're thinkin' of me
It's like the day that we first met,
    If you could only remember
    What I try to forget.

And, if you really want to give up so easy
    There's nothing I can do,
But I'm feelin' like you really want to
    see me
    You're heart's coming through --
    Oh, try to remember....

I know you're thinkin' of me, you know I
    haven't been wrong yet,
I know that you still love me, if you could
    only let yourself --
    If you could only remember
    What I try to forget.
