Story Behind the Song
My good friend, Sean McGarry, has been employed as both a boxer AND a nurse...and is as big-hearted as he is argumentative. He makes his living as roofer, but he ought to be a philospher. One day he came over to fix my roof with a 102 degree fever and asked for my help getting up the ladder (he could barely stand). After a 10 minute argument I managed to send him home and wrote this song.
Recorded on a 4 Track. Guitar and lead vocal tracks are a simultaneous one take (obviously!) and I begged Kathy to add a harmony at 1:30 AM the day I wrote it, in spite of the minor detail that she had never heard the song before.
Lyrics
Note: Irish vs American Slang Warning!
Just like "Great Crack" in Ireland is not the stuff that gets you arrested in America there are some words in the tune that might confuse some listeners. I'm told that "ape" might be considered a big insult in Ireland so I'll have to change that to "mate" in the future. I meant it only as a funny observation of his climbing prowess (when I get on a ladder my knees shake like a chicken!). "King of A'int" is poking fun at his argumentative nature, that he likes to disagree...the song is meant to both celebrate, and poke gentle fun, at my good friend.
"Sean's On the Roof"
Sean's on the roof and he won't come down
until he's milked your sacred cow
Sean's on the roof and he won't come down
until he's disagreed somehow
He's the boxing nurse
the sinning saint
An Irishman who doesn't drink
Sean's on the roof pushing tar around
Sean's got six kids and a lovely gal
Sean's on the roof high above the crowd
muttering curses and sacred vows
He's the boxing nurse
the King of Ain't
Philosopher and ladder ape
An Irish heart's biggest
when farthest from home
Your heart Sean's bigger
than Blarney Stone
Sean's on the roof, Sean's on the roof
He ain't coming down, he ain't coming down!
