Story Behind the Song
A lot of poetry from New York City has this real claustrophobic feeling to it. Theres a lot of anxiety, and I tried to get that feeling into this song. The line "it's June, and I'm tired of being brave" is from a poem by Anne Sexton.
Lyrics
I want you to see through me, I want you to find me out
but Im not the type to take chances with my best friends girlfriend
I want you to renew me, I want you to erase my doubt
but Im not the type to make passes at my best friends girlfriend
we grew up way too slow, now theres too much to believe
its June, and Im tired of being brave
and the higher you fly, the thinner the air gets
then you slip from the airlane like a Valujet
Hey restless, come get this
Its a sad afternoon to wake up to and realize she doesnt love you anymore
she cant afford to, and youll never get to New York
but I can understand that her life is easier without me
never getting caught up in circumstantial evidence
no pills to make you feel better, no need to feel better, no need to feel
she says, youre boring when youre drunk, you know that?
so I cleaned your apartment I scrubbed the floors I painted them white
cuz Im a dirty animal and I need a place to sleep tonight
Hey restless, come get this
I never thought of you as much, I never thought of you as such an intelligent lover
if I had known I would have set sail and found your love a land to discover
Hey restless, come get this
