Story Behind the Song
I started to live out a childhood dream in 1972 after writing a few songs and performing them as part of a couple rock 'n roll bands that I was in. During that year, I came up with a chord progression and a melody for a song, but I could never seem to find just the right words, because I always had this strong feeling that the lyrics never matched the song. In 1994, my 12-year-old daughter, Genevieve Rae Stratton, a sixth grader, died unexpectedly from kidney disease. After her death, our family was going to hold a memorial service and we found out that the entire sixth grade class was being bussed to the church to attend the service (unusual for a public school). On the day before the service, I picked up my guitar and began to warm-up by playing my unfinished song - the chord progression from 1972. As I warmed up, the words to the chord progression that I had been looking for came to me and after 22 years, my song was complete. I was able to perform and share it with those who came to the memorial service. I named the song "With Me". This event and song became the foundation song of a music ministry that has grown to become the Forgiven band and their first recording project "Come As You Are".

I'm walking, walking, down the road of life
All my memories of Genny are buried deep inside
Although she left us alone, to kneel before the Throne
She's not up there alone, my dad too, was called Home.
I'm getting the feeling that the Spirit is alive
That she has left the sorrow and the hurting far behind
The feeling that He found her, and with His death He set her free
The feeling she's free, for eternity she will be with me, with me
As I'm walking with Him, I hear her laughter in the wind
Through His loving grace, I see a smile on her face
Her red hair hanging down, spreading sunshine all around
Her voice sings in the rain saying "Daddy there's no pain"
I'm getting the feeling that the Spirit is alive
That I have left the sorrow and the hurting far behind
The feeling that He found me, and with His death He set me free
The feeling I'm free, for eternity He will be with me, with me
I'm walking, walking, down the road of life
All my memories of Genny and her love are here inside
Now she saw the Throne, Heaven's realm is where she'll roam
She's not up there alone, soon it too, will be my Home.
I'm getting the feeling that the Spirit is alive
That we have left the sorrow and the hurting far behind
The feeling that He found us, and with His death He set us free
The feeling we're free, for eternity they will be with me, with me
