Story Behind the Song
Buxtehude is one of the "fathers" of organ playing and organ composition. He studied organ with his father and was then appointed organist at Helsingør in 1660. Eight years later he was appointed to the much more lucrative post of organist at the Marienkirche in Lübeck. While there he started an annual series of public concerts for the five weeks preceding Christmas. This marked the beginning of a tradition which persisted into the early nineteenth centruy. His fame was so great that, according to legend, the young J.S. Bach once walked 200 miles in order to attend one of Buxtehude's concerts. Buxtehude continued at Lübeck until his retirement in 1703.
To transcribe, phrase and register this piece took me about 3 half day sessons, but was entirely enjoyable and a great learning experience. I was trying to create the same effects I used when I was able to perform this piece in my former career as a church organist.
