Story Behind the Song
Recorded live in November 1999, this famous aria from LA BOHEME is a comedic side trip into one of the supporting characters of the opera, Musetta. She and Marcello (friend of Rodolfo, BOHEME's romantic lead) were once lovers, but alas, Marcello fell in love with Musetta much to his dismay. Because she is a shameless flirt, he does not think he can tolerate her behavior, so he breaks off. At the Café Momus, where all Rodolfo's friends have gathered (now also joined by Mimi), and Musetta proceeds to drive Marcello crazy by flirting with every man there except him.
Eventually, the two volatile characters get back together later in the opera, and prove to be perfect for each other -- although they fight all the time, the love between them is great.
Lyrics
When I go alone along the promenade, the people turn admiringly,
And at my dazzling beauty they all turn my way.
And then I savor that intense desire, which I feel when our eyes meet,
as I display my ravishing attire, with enchanting appeal.
And when the wave of fervent longing invites romances, how happy it makes me,
how happy it makes me!
And you that know, still struggling in your memories, why do you resist me?
So, good: you fight your tortured heart in vain, for you die for me!
