The Copus tribute to all of the great poets and jazz musicians whose collaborations fostered the'Beat' scene on both coasts. A two part, jazzy original composition by Wendy Loomis gives wing to the lyrical poetry of Royal Kent. Part one is a jazz fusion groove with strong percussion and a haunting melody. Part two opens up into a free form, atonal swing giving the players room to stretch their musical magic. The fresh, new sound of this track is proof, the spokenword/music art form is alive and well. Instrumentation includes piano, cello, flute, drums and percussion. |

Story Behind the Song
Shortly after his arrival in San Francisco,
Royal began his participation in the thriving
poetry scene by enrolling in a, now legendary,
performance class called "Poetry for the People."
During this period, the poem, "Alchemy of Life"
was penned. Fast forward two decades and a chance
meeting with Wendy Loomis, composer extraordinaire.
Wendy, at the time, was performing as a piano/cello
duo called Galatea. After walking in on their set at
Café Internationals famed open mic in 1996, Royal
was floored by their sound. Her compositions reflected
the great discipline of her classical training together
with a keen ability to mix it with all musical styles.
The seeds of the now six piece ensemble, Copus, were
planted then and there and a powerful collaboration
between composer and poet is the result. This is why
we call it "Alchemy Of Life."
Lyrics
It all overlaps
In stacks and stacks
Circles once around
And then perhaps
Proceeds to move
In a whirling motion
The aforementioned
Is potion
To the mystical
Alchemy of Life
Who's every move
Is precise
