    Story Behind the Song
"Kill Their Idols" is easily our most popular song when we perform live, so much so, that it's almost become a bit of the proverbial albatross for the band. We feel that our other songs better illustrate our intent as a band, but this one- the lead off track on 1998's "Eat Sleep Mate Defend" EP (Escape Artist) still causes a lot of singing along and rocking... So it's hard to complain!
The song has been grossly misinterpreted as some sort of religious anthem, which it is not. What it's talking about is the fact that everyone bows down to idols of some sort- a consistent lyrical theme throughout the seven song EP- and that we shouldn't point fingers at anyone because of their "religion" when we all have practice a "religion" in some way or another.
"Kill Their Idols" is about rejecting the idols that the status quo feeds us: fake religions devoid of spirituality, gross sexual objectification and sexism, racism, excessive materialism, etc.
This song says to be your own person. Deconstruct all of the lies and boundaries the small, elitist handful of corporations and institutions tell us to live our lives by, and begin anew from the ground up. In other words, Burn It Down.
We wrote the music for this song at our old practice space on College Ave. in Indy, called DIY Studios. It was one of a handful of songs we wrote when Johnny Johnson (who has since moved back to California and joined the band Dead America) joined the Burn it Down for a year long stint in 1998. Zeps wrote the guitar parts, partially based on some ideas from Ryan, and Bob did a lot of arranging before it all came together. Ryan wrote some of the lyrics on the spot, and finished the rest later.
The song was recorded- along with the rest of the EP, and an unreleased cover of Black Sabbath's "Heaven & Hell"- in the spring of 1998 at Caboose Studios with then-Emotion Zero guitarist "Metal" Mike Downton at the helm. The record was released in Sept. of '98, then remixed and re-mastered by Tom Roosa at The Lodge studio, and re-released on both CD and 10" format.

    Lyrics
    What are you made of?
    Who's your Creator?
Who comforts you when you sleep?

    What animates you?
    Who do you pray to?
Are you the master, the master of all that you see?

    What are you made of?
    Who's your Creator?
You're flesh and blood until you decide to be more than you see.

We'll see what they're made of
We'll see what they're made of

    You dance around the fire
    Of such transient desires
You bow your head to a decaying ground
    Your TV. Your over-sexuality
Your magazine cuts me like a million bodies washed out to sea.
What are you made of? I see you worship
Yourself and everything that they taught you to be.

Be more than what you see.
    Kill Their Idols.

    Kill Their Idols.
    We'll Kill Their Idols.
