Story Behind the Song
The story of this song is too long to write here, but suffice it to say that it was written in stages, with each new verse inspired by another lost love.
Lyrics
Blackness
by Kevin Matthew Polke
28 March 1995
The night was black, not a star in the sky,
And I found myself all alone with my thoughts again.
So I thought of you, and I thought of me —
I thought of us, and the love that might have been.
And the blackness held such beauty that I almost lost control.
And the beauty shook my body as it overcame my soul.
I held the whole world in my hands, and I gave it all to you
But the blackness and I were the only ones who knew.
The night is young, but I’m still alone,
And I hopelessly pray for a ring of the phone that won’t be.
So I think of those days, and my nights filled with you
But all that I have now are long nights filled only with me.
And the blackness held such beauty that I almost lost control.
And the beauty shook my body as it overcame my soul.
I held the whole world in my hands, and I gave it all to you
But the blackness and I were the only ones who knew.
The night will be over, and morning will come,
But the love that I lost will still haunt me from deep within.
So I’ll wait for the day when my heart can go on
When my pain will subside, and my new life can begin.
And the blackness held such beauty that I almost lost control.
And the beauty shook my body as it overcame my soul.
I held the whole world in my hands, and I gave it all to you
But the blackness and I were the only ones who knew.
