Story Behind the Song
Written on Jan 1, 1998. The tracking session (ie. the drums and the 12-string guitar) was recorded in a concert hall using the natural room tone to get the huge sounding drums.
Lyrics
It wasn't so long ago
She fell in love with a man she didn't know
He made her think that he was the greatest
It turned out later, he was a sadist
And he hurt her like-she's never been hurt
He didn't care-treated her like dirt
For months at a time, he'd leave her alone
She didn't believe she could be on her own
CHORUS:
And how many nights had she spent all alone
Waiting by the telephone
And how many tears had she wasted on him
How many hours, feeling so grim
Though she didn't know it- it'd all go away
This is the first day of the best, year of her life
After he left-she struggled with pain
Her days were filled with nothing but rain
She wrote songs when she was sad
She realized later, she wasn't half bad
She knew right then-what a fool she'd been
She wondered how, he got under her skin
After all, he was scary and weird
He looked kinda silly in that 2-foot beard
Chorus
BRIDGE:
Happy days were creepin' in
Sometimes you'd even see her grin
Oh how happy she could be
Without him
Instrumental
Just today he heard her play
A record producer would make her day
He knew right away-that she would make it
She was the real thing, didnt have to fake it
ALT CHORUS:
And how many nights had she spent all alone
Waiting by the telephone
And how many tears had she wasted on him
Her light inside-growing so dim
Though she didnt know it, it'd all go away
This is the first day of the best, year of her life, year of her life.
