The overture was written as a deeply felt reaction to the carnage that had occurred in Bosnia. It is dedicated to the victims of the Bosnian holocaust.A plaintive and lonely trumpet announces the main theme of the overture, which is immediately repeated with simple harmonic accompaniment for the horns. When the full orchestra takes up the theme it keeps the same thythm but with a different metrical stress and a far more elaborate accompaniment. This suddenly gives way to an accompanying figure on the harp which introduces a very intimate clarinet theme which is again assumed by the whole orchestra with more complex accompaniment including a wonderful counter-melody in the strings and fanfare-like rhythms.A further sudden interruption of the orchestra in full flow again heralds the second theme which is now played fortissimo. The overture finishes in a very quiet and reflective mood with the winds and harp offering a last glimpse of the second subject at half speed. |
