The Piano Concerto was written in 1995 and was conceived in the conventional form of three movements, with an orchestral introduction, virtuoso solo writing and substantial cadenzas. The opening theme of the first movement is announced quietly by the strings. Built over a tonic pedal, its constuction is harmonically based. The beauty and simplicity of this opening provides a wonderful contrast to the virtuoso entry of the piano part, which offers a major challenge to the soloist with its huge sonorities and long passages of 32nd notes. The orchestra's use of the main theme owes much to the ritornello structure of the Baroque concerto. It provides interludes and accompaniment to the soloist who eventually breaks completely into a breathtaking cadenza in the grandest romantic tradition. Only at the very end of the movement is the orchestra allowed to reappear with a hint of the main theme. |
