This song is an anthemic examination of the thin line between "Pleasure and Pain". The first half of the song was originally intended to be a female vocal, told from the standpoint of a newlywed wife. "I am your pleasure" is the catchline. In the second half, tragedy rears his head and the illusion of security and a perfect world is shattered. The end result (last verse) shows how quickly pleasure can turn to pain; love to lies; and commitment to abandonment and suffering. Jim Abercrombie's guitar work on this one is excellent, and Damon's trademark vocal stylings drive its tragic story home with a vengeance. Heavy Industrial drums by Mike Shiver and the "aloof" bass of Brian Howell punctuate the track effectively.

    Story Behind the Song
Based on the true-life shooting of Damon's brother Markus in 1996 during an attempted robbery, this song chronicles the peripheral personal tragedies that resulted. Newly married and celebrating the birth of his son at the time of the shooting, Markus was lucky to keep his left leg after very extensive surgeries, and still must undergo many more. During his stay in the hospital, Damon wrote this song after witnessing the effects of the shooting and the psychological trauma he underwent while attached to a morphine drip for several weeks. The loss of his home and subsequent divorce soon saw Markus watching his greatest pleasures become his greatest source of loss and suffering.

    Lyrics
    Pleasure and Pain

    Graceful epiphany, shrouded in mystery,...
I brought you comfort and burning desire.
    Destined to be togehter in harmony;
Nothing on Earth could have taken you higher.

To honor and obey,... I took the fears away,
    Giving you stamina to persevere.
Beneath the shroud of night, I brought your dreams to Light,
Progeny sacred, the world shall endear.

I am the light of emotion that shines in your eyes.
I am an infinte ocean of Love beyond measure.
I am the smile on your face! You must realize,...
Felicity and contentment,... I am your pleasure.

    Careless revelry, ends in tragedy.
Distorted memories pound in your head.
Victim of circumstance, you never had a chance.
At least you're alive in your hospital bed.

Who is the loyal friend on whom your fate depends?
Do you know for certain if I am for real?
Is there a lesson here, mingled in with the fear?
Are there some wounds here which may never heal?

I am the pounding pulsation which throbs in your chest.
I am the burning frustration that drives you insane.
I am the morphine which itches and robs you of rest.
I am the cross you must bear. I am your Pain!

    (repeat 1st verse)

I am the broken commitment. I am the lies.
I am eternal solitude twisting your brain.
I am the promise of what's to come. I am surprise!
I am the heart of obsession. Pleasure and Pain!
