As the lead in says, "Another bed-centric Populuxe song!" This performance, culled from the January 14 show at Baby Jupiter in NYC, was the debut. Stripped down to guitarbassdrumsvoice, a crisp song to play. "I got your back" with Big Star sound. |

Story Behind the Song
This was the very first performance of the song. We had one rehearsal with it almost finished, and then I finished it up, had another rehearsal the day before the show, and played it. Jim was mad, but that's the way I like doing things -- NOW. Hell, we had a good time playing it, eve tho' I botched the first verse (sang the lyrics to the second, and then sang the proper first verse in the second verse. I reversed them, you see. would've been easier had I just said that, eh. Well, you found me out. I'm a wordy dope.) Anyway, you can hear just how much I blew the lyrics. I don't really care.
The track, and the other two from this gig are the only versions out there that'll be available in this form, i.e., completely unmixed and raw. We just ran the tapes to get a reference of the show, and mixing will occur sometime later this month. So you, MP3.com fan will have the original, uncut version. What a tale to tell yer grandkids someday.
Songwise, it was written because pictures are false, movies are false, all images are false and even if they look great and remind you of everything you love about someone, they're still a form of a lie. Even memory is faulty and colored by all sorts of uncontrollable variables. Only the moment is real, and that's totally fleeting. Nuts. Be here now, as it were. Maybe the primitives have it right and we're the dupes is basically the message, and the emotion is something of a vow. A love song, too.
Lyrics
You know the pictures that I carry around aren't good enough
They're only paper, and somehow convince me that they're you
The primal people think it steals their souls
They may be onto something we don't know
We gather evidence but that won't stop any hours from turning
I kiss your face, and you just laugh at me
But I can't replace the time
as my memory grows longer,
I can't waste the years I've got
So I'll steal my kiss for you with love,
while you're sleeping
You know the million dollar letters that I give you aren't everything
They're only paper, if a good wind grabs 'em
then they're gone
The primal people use them for their fire
they might connect with something so much higher
I'm writing endlessly as if that proves that the world was spinning
I take your hand, and you just humor me
Don't you understand we're only
products of what came before us
and soil for what's next
So I'll steal my kiss from you with love
while you're sleeping
Everything that gets in my way;
every dollar that I overpay;
If everything, but the car, went away;
I wouldn't mind
I wouldn't mind
I wouldn't mind, because I love you
I know that sometimes I run around acting like an animal
Hollering about some stupid little problem no one cares about
The primal people wouldn't waste that power
to rectify it's too much time and flowers
-- Those last four lines are just my clumsy way of saying "I'm sorry"
I cross my eyes, so you'll just laugh at me
But all jokes and laughs aside --
If the language on my tongue would fail me,
bad blood won't clog my heart
I know we struggle through these problems
and we crawl our way from darkness and
I hope and pray that you're OK
and that I don't dim your spark
So I'll stick around for you
and I'll stand my ground for you
and I'll leave my kiss for you with love
while you're sleeping
