Story Behind the Song
I think the phrase "I can see it in the sky, I can hear it in the wind" came first. That already got me moving in the folk direction. I fit the phrase to a hook (well, as hookish as I get), & then spun out some verses that seemed to fit in.
Actually, I'm quite pleased with the lyrics -- about the closest I've ever gotten to the pure folk tradition.
As with many of my songs, there is a lot of ambivalence: elemental passions/storms as a power both joyous and savage, with the sun rising on a new day.
Lyrics
When I was born, my daddy
Built a spare room on the house.
The day I told him I'm leavin'
A twister ripped that room out.
I guess that rain and lightnin'
It sprung straight out of his heart.
I can see it in the sky,
I can feel it in the wind,
We got a new storm comin' in.
Years ago I met you
On a visit to my uncle's farm.
Later that day we went walkin'
In an old orange grove by the pond.
That same night a freak hailstorm,
It struck every single orange down.
I can see it in the sky,
I can feel it in the wind,
We got a new storm comin' in.
Life with you, my darlin',
Is just like a day in Spring.
Sometimes the sun is shinin',
Sometimes the birds do sing;
Sometimes the air gets frozen,
And sometimes the rain clouds move in.
I can see it in the sky,
I can hear it in the wind ...
I can see it in your eyes,
I can feel it in your grin ...
Just let the old blow by,
Let somethin' else begin --
We got a new day comin' in.
