Story Behind the Song
"Gibbous Moon" refers to that stage of the moon that is nearly, but not quite, full. During a certain period in my life, it became a metaphor for unrealized potential, of the frustrations that attended always feeling that I was "almost" there-wherever "there" happened to be at the time. Now I tend to feel that these stages of (apparent) incompleteness are an intrinsic part of growing and developing as a human being.
Lyrics
Gibbous moon up in the sky
when I was born, and when I die
I sleep all night and I sleep all day
until that gibbous moon goes away
I am almost happy
I almost made the honor roll
I am almost good and I am almost brave
I could almost love you
I almost won the lottery
I almost got out of bed to do some work today
Gibbous moon, etc.
I am almost ready
for some kind of commitment
for some kind of action
that would start me off today
I almost became a superstar
with a lawyer and accountant
but I could almost hear
what everyone would say
Gibbous moon, etc.
I am almost sorry
that I never do anything
but I decided it was better to pretend
I almost wrote a pop song
about the way I almost feel
but I knew it wouldn't help me in the end
Gibbous moon, etc.
