Story Behind the Song
UNTIL THEY'RE GONE
I WROTE THIS AS A SORT OF LAMENT ON ONE OF
MY LATE NIGHT/EARLY MORNING WALKS (OF WHICH
I'M IN THE HABIT OF DOING QUITE OFTEN). I HAD
BEEN REMINISCING AT HOW I MISSED TAKING THESE
WALKS WITH TWO DIFFERENT FRIENDS OF MINE ON
NUMEROUS OCCASIONS.THE WALKS WITH DAVE WERE
USUALLY FILLED WITH WONDEROUS CONVERSATION
ABOUT MUSIC AND OUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE
(THUS THE PHRASES "MIDNIGHT AIR, WITH CAFE
FARE, SPENT SIFTING THROUGH THE SECRETS OF OUR
SOULS" & "THE HOPES WE GAVE TOMMORROW HAVE
FADED INTO GREY").THE WALKS WITH GARY WERE
SPENT WITH A BIT MORE ADVENTURE. DOING THINGS
SUCH AS RIDING TRICYCLES DOWN EAST CAPITOL
BLVD, AT UNUSUALLY FAST SPEEDS. OR, RIDING
TEN SPEEDS DOWN CANYON ROADS (WITHOUT LIGHTS)
WHILE OPTING NOT TO USE BRAKES. MY PERSONAL
FAVORITE WAS MAKING ASCENTS TO THE ROOFTOPS
OF MANY OF THE MAJOR BUILDINGS DOWNTOWN...
MOSTLY WITHOUT THE USE OF LADDERS OR STAIRWAYS.
THUS THE PHRASES "SLEEPLESS HOURS, THROUGH
THE TOWERS, WITH THE SHIMMERING OF CITY
STREETS BELOW". BUT, AS TIME DRIFTS ON SO DID
BOTH OF THESE FRIENDS. DAVE LIVES OUTSIDE OF
SEATTLE AND GARY IS IN COLORADO SPRINGS.
OCCASIONALLY WE GET TOGETHER BUT OUR LIVES
HAVE BECOME SEPARATE.
Lyrics
UNTIL THEY'RE GONE Words/Music DAVID G.HAHN
STARLIT NIGHTS, THROUGH PALE BLUE LIGHT
FROM THE LAMPPOSTS LINING ROADS THAT LED US HOME
A COOL BREEZE BLOWS, A MOONLIT GLOW
REFLECTING THROUGH THE TREES NOW ICED WITH SNOW
IT'S LIKE A THOUSAND MILES AWAY
NO ROADS LEFT BETWEEN US, NO WORDS ARE LEFT TO SAY
IT'S LIKE A THOUSAND MILES AWAY
PHOTOGRAPHS AND MEMORIES, ON PAGES LEFT TO FADE
...UNTIL THEY'RE GONE
SLEEPLESS HOURS, THROUGH THE TOWERS
THE SHIMMERING OF CITY STREETS BELOW
MIDNIGHT AIR, WITH CAFE FARE
SPENT SIFTING THROUGH THE SECRETS OF OUR SOULS
IT'S LIKE A THOUSAND MILES AWAY
THE HOPES WE GAVE TOMORROW, ARE FADING INTO GREY
IT'S LIKE A THOUSAND MILES AWAY
OLD GUITARS AND PHONOGRAPHS, ARE ALL THAT STILL REMAINS
...UNTIL THEY'RE GONE
MIDNIGHT STILL REMINDS ME OF YOU
HOW THE MOONLIGHT DANCES OFF THE STREETS
IN HAUNTING SHADES OF BLUE
STILL THE DAY BREAKS IN AND FADES MY THOUGHTS OF YOU,
AND THINGS WE'VE DONE
...UNTIL THEY'RE GONE
INSTRUMENTAL VERSE…
IT'S LIKE A THOUSAND MILES AWAY
NO ROADS LEFT BETWEEN US, NO WORDS ARE LEFT TO SAY
IT'S LIKE A THOUSAND MILES AWAY
JUST PHOTOGRAPHS AND MEMORIES, ON PAGES LEFT TO FADE
...UNTIL THEY'RE GONE
MIDNIGHT STILL REMINDS ME OF YOU
HOW THE MOONLIGHT DANCES OFF THE STREETS
IN HAUNTING SHADES OF BLUE
STILL THE DAY BREAKS IN AND FADES MY THOUGHTS OF YOU
AND THINGS WE'VE DONE
UNTIL THEY'RE GONE
