Story Behind the Song
The song is in some kind of hypnotic C-tuning, maybe one of the first I've ever written with the guitar tuned down this way. For a while there, every time I tuned in, I'd write a new song. . .it's such an evocative tuning--I highly recommend it (CGCGCE). Although it probably sounds like the lyrics are addressed to someone, they really aren't, or maybe the song is addressed to everyone, or no one, or maybe to myself in all the roles. Anyway, that kind of self-interpretation can be pretty boring for the rest of the world. Suffice to say, I like what the song expresses, regardless of whoever it's "really" addressed to.
Lyrics
How many times do you want me to tell you,
I'm insecure
How many times I've told you,
I know I'm to blame
Before you open your door
Why must you bury everything
Everything you feel
Before you smash those nerves of steel
You take me on this ride
This roller coaster ride
Of guessing what is real
chorus:
why don't you talk to me
I want you to talk to me, now
why don't you talk to me
why won't you talk?
I've watched the day breaking
Breaking through the window
so darkly
I've heard the night singing
The moon and a million stars
Singing out so darkly
chorus:
why don't you talk to me
I want you to talk to me, now
why don't you talk to me
why won't you talk?
How many words
must we leave around the room
Scattered in the gloom
And how can we touch
if we keep our love at bay
till our chances slip away
chorus:
why don't you talk to me
I want you to be free, now
why don't you talk to me
why won't you talk?
