Story Behind the Song
The morning I turned 50, I wrote the first few lines in bed. I put it together with another melody I was working on and recorded it with my Strat, using Roland sound modeling for the bass line.
Lyrics
Woke this morning, couldn’t get out of bed
Couldn’t believe what the calendar said
Another birthday, circled in red
Got The Five-Oh Birthday Blues, The Five-Oh Birthday Blues
Tried to fit into last year’s clothes
Hurt my back when I touched my toes
I can’t see much beyond my nose
I got The Five-Oh Birthday Blues, The Five-Oh Birthday Blues
Chorus 1
Used to be that I could play all night
Get 3 hours sleep and wake up feeling right
But that was then and how it used to be
Now I’m getting letters from the AARP
So my stride’s a little slower
Can’t do the lawn without a sit-down mower
Saw an old girlfriend, and I didn’t know her
I got The Five-Oh Birthday Blues, The Five-Oh Birthday Blues
Chorus 2
I think of all the things I used to do
At least what I recall (forgot a thing or two)
And I hope that there’s still a few miles in me
There’s a whole lotta world that I have yet to see
So I guess that I’ll roll out of bed
Try to get some music in my head
Being here is better than being dead
So I’m waiting for those Six-Oh Blues
Just dealing with the Five-Oh Blues
