    Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song shortly after splitting with my first wife. We had been married 10 years and had one son. He was four years old at the time. The music was originally written by patty for a violin soloist to work with. I asked for a tape and on the ensuing drive home I pieced the lyrics together in my head. Probably one of the most heartfelt songs I have ever written. I hope it brings some cathartic relief to anyone who might have had the same experience. I think this would make a great country and western song. Randy Travis you out there anywhere?

    Lyrics
    make it better

hold my hand just a little bit longer
he’s much smaller but tonight he’s stronger than me
kneeling down beside him in bed
    I kiss his sleepy head

fast asleep so I pull up the covers
the more he grows the more he favors his mother
I pause , turn an slip out the door
like I’ve done so many nights before

but tonight I don’t climb into bed
I climb into my car instead
and drive what must be a world away
he’s always asking why can’t you stay?

he knows daddy can fix so many things
a little glue, a piece of tape or tied with strings
a daddy can fix so many things
daddy won’t you pleas make it better?

in just three weeks we’ll celebrate his fifth birthday
I pick him up from pre-school every Thursday
he smiles , happy meals and trips to the mall
the other days I always call

thinking back when that balloon I gave him just popped
he went rushing .picking up pieces that dropped
he placed them in my hand,
so sure I could make it better again

he cried so hard when I said it couldn’t be repaired
big explanations won’t fit in his little ears
he cam running back with tape in hand
    I couldn’t make him understand

because he knows daddy can fix so many things
a little glue a piece of tape or tied with strings
a daddy can fix so many things
daddy won’t you please make it better?

now the weekends are the days we are sharing
he ask “why did you and mom get unmarried?
I stop and think about balloons that burst
and wonder what do I say first
hold my hand just a little bit longer
he’s much smaller but tonight he’s stronger than me
